Simmer has been Djing/Producing Techno since the early 90s. He made his mark with the infamous allnighter Shimmy, record label Shimmy Recordings and twenty years of worldwide gigs that honed his Djing skills. This experience has given Simmer a solid Techno based background that show through in his performances and tracks. Simmer regularly plays at the infamous Masked ball and continues to spread his own brand of Techno to the dancefloor masses.
We caught up with Simmer in his dark techno cave for a quick Q&A Session
Q – When did you start DJing and what made you want to do it?
A – After a few years going to the big illegal raves and a week at Castle Moreton in the early 90’s I moved to Bristol and got involved with the growing scene. Met some cool people and had a go on the decks and never looked back.
Q – Who were your early influences/idols when you started out?
A – Some of my greatest influences in the beginning for me were from the likes of Sasha, DIY, 808 State, Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox to name a few and many good Dj friends around me.
Q – Where was the first party you played at?
A – My first Dj set was at a NYE party in a big country house playing to a packed dancefloor near Bath. Amazing night!
Q – For people who have not heard your sets yet, what 3 words would you use to describe them?
A – Deep Banging Techno
Q – Out of all your set tracks, which one never fails to get the dancefloor rocking?
A – I don’t really have set tracks as I try to keep things fresh and promote new music. That said, now and then a track will stick out and get rinsed for months if not years.
Q – Where was the biggest/best party you have played to date?
A – I have played some epic gigs in some pretty awesome worldwide locations over the years that all deserve a mention but Glastonbury main Dance Tent in 97 was a memorable one and most recently the last Kynance crowd were off the hook.
Q – Which do you prefer DJing or Producing and why?
A – Djing was my first love and production is my second. There is nothing like playing your tracks with your favourites out to a packed and up for it Dancefloor.
Q – What do you think of the electronic music scene in Cornwall at the minute?
A – There is a wealth of Dance Music talent in Cornwall right now and there have been some top notch events this summer. Long may it continue.
Q – Which other local DJs do you rate?
A – Right now in the Techno world locally I am loving what Jewel is doing. She has her own solid style and always funky. John Harris is living up to it and banging it out and a newcomer, SammyFish is worth watching out for.
Q – Where can readers see you play next?
A – Catch me next at The Halloween Masked Ball at Flambards, Helston on Saturday 31st October.
