Well what can be said about the Godfather of Drum ‘n’ Bass that hasn’t been said before?? Nicky Blackmarket has been one of the biggest names in Drum ‘n’ Bass right from the very beginning and is one of the most talented DJ’s on the circuit even to this day. Being widely regarded as one of the pivotal figures in the early Drum ‘n’ Bass/Jungle scene he has over 20 years of experience of performing to crowds world wide and we are lucky enough to have him play for us on the 29th of May at the new home of Essential Cornwall, Salt. I was lucky enough to get the chance to ask him a few questions about his history and his views on the scene before his trip down to destroy our dance floor! Heres what he had to say…
Q. When did you first start DJ’ing and what made you get into it
A. I first started playing when I was 15 in youth clubs and house party and just loved playing music full stop. I probably got biiig influences from my mum as she knew a lot of the Jazz Cats.
Q. You must have seen some change over that time, whats your thoughts on the progression of Dj’ing as an art?
A. It’s changing all the time and you can’t halt technology, it’s all gooooood!
Q. Taking it back to the very beginning, can you remember where your first ever gig was?
A. It was at a youth club called Contacts in Pimlico, London
Q. Who were your early influences/idols when you started out?
A. A lot of the original pirate radio DJ’s at the time from LWR, Original Kiss FM and Invicta to name a few.
Q .At what point did you get introduced to Drum ’n’ Bass and what made you choose it as a genre to carry on playing?
A. From the very beginning, I was interested in the whole Breakbeat thing, and just see it as a logical progression into Jungle/DnB
Q. What have been the highlights of your career to date?
A. Oh gosh, I think that I’m still doing this is a feat in itself lol.
Q. Do you have a track that you use knowing it will get the dance floor bouncing, and if so are we allowed to know it?
A. Tooooo many toooonz to be honest, It’s just how you create the vibe is important.
Q. For those who haven’t heard your sets yet, describe them in 3 words.
A. Vibes, Energy and Dance lol!
Q. If you were chosen to headline at the worlds greatest festival alongside DJ’s past or present who would they be?
A. That list would be never ending!
Q. What do you think of the DnB scene in general at the moment?
A. I think its healthy, going in different directions.
Q. And finally what festivals and big events can your fans see you at this summer?
A. Well, theres lots going on for the summer, Glasto, Boomtown, Summergathering, DnB Awards just to name a few!
